Kick Starting Africa’s Carbon Markets

The carbon market is a promising mechanism to stimulate green industries and a low-carbon economy in Africa. In 2009 around $84 billion was invested in 684 emerging market emission reduction projects. African nations shared only 2% of this global total. To help kick start growth in Africa’s carbon markets, ACAD was formed by UNEP in cooperation with Standard Bank. It is generously funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry.

The public-private partnership aims to address specific African needs through:

Technical support for local project developers
Provision of carbon finance training to local financial institutions
Targeted grants for early stage costs.
ACAD’s approach places emphasis on developing local capacity, industries and market-driven solutions on a sustainable basis. We invite potential project developers and local entrepreneurs to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
